use of articles a an or the

1.Use "a" before consonant sounds; "an "before vowel sounds

Note :We are discussing sounds; not letters

a bag , an elephant, ------ mall ,.....European , ....ear,    .....year, ..hour , ..honest man,.....hospital

.....ice cream    ...... candy
vowel sounds : those denoted by a ,e, i,o,u

(അ, ആ ,ഇ , ഈ ,എ, ഏ ,ഉ ,ഊ, ഐ ,ഒ ,ഓ, ഔ )

consonants: ,b,c,d,f,g,h,  etc....


2. use "a / an "with only countable nouns


countable nouns:  pen,money ,word,speech,car,book,..........
uncountable nouns :help,advice ,love ,water,money,air,sugar,coffee,milk,sand,love ,anger,happiness,wisdom.knowledge,news,darkness,light

fruit ?
the word fruit can be both countable and uncountable.
I want some fruit . / I want a lot of fruit /make sure you eat fruits today / I had fruit for lunch today.

Individual fruits are countable.
I  want five pine apples. Please bring four apples.Give him three oranges.

3. use "the" to speak about a familiar person.
    Use "a /an" to speak about an unknown person'
